The Buried Giant

My fourth commission for the Financial Times book review section was to accompany a review of Kazuo Ishiguro’s latest novel ‘The Buried Giant’.

As usual, details are scant because the book is a new release, so the challenge is to hopefully convey the right mood. I knew the book is set in an Arthurian Middle age and plays with fantasy conventions, and features an elderly couple as it’s major protagonists.

I wouldn’t normally produce so many thumbnails, but there was so many directions I could go in, although keeping the figures small was a constant through necessity (without reading the book I had no idea what they look like) A couple of thumbnails took the title literally, having a giant hidden in a rock formation, or a grasping hand made from standing stones. The chosen picture has a Charon-like boatman approaching across the lake. Which is pink. What can I say – I like pink.
