Last year I worked on a trilogy of books by Fleur Hitchcock, murder mystery for children. An advantage was being able to work on all three covers at the same time, to get a distinct feel for each cover, but a simple compositional link between the set.

I tried a lot of rough options for the first cover (I still like the bobble hat flying off), then the next two followed the format.

A bit of foil blocking on each and the covers were done – thanks to everyone at Nosy Crow books for the commission.

  1. Your illustrations definitely capture the feeling of a looming mystery, & the vague threat that comes with the possibility it won’t be solved. As a kid I would’ve pulled these books right off the shelf, the old adage be damned, just to see if the story lived up to them.
